On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

The debut of CBS’s Viva Laughlin (and the temporary departure of Without A Trace) should have made it an easy night for ABC.  But despite low numbers at 10pm, CBS still came very close to taking the night in both viewers and demos.

  • With 13.4 million viewers, the aging (4.3/13 in 18-49 age group) shows no signs of slowing down. Viva Laughlin
  • FOX’s Red Sox/Indians game (3.3/8) averaged about 11.6 million fans through the evening.
  • (9.7 million, 3.1/9) dropped about 730,000 viewers this week.

The 9pm hour proves to be Thursday night’s most heated battleground.  And just like Wednesday night, ABC ruled the 18-49 age group while CBS gathered the largest audience.

9pm

  • (18.9 million, 7.8/19 in 18-49) led the night in the demo market.

The Office keeps getting better has still got it – that much is certain. And while I do feel there is something off about this season, I still can’t put my finger on it, and it’s not enough to disrupt my enjoyment of the NBC comedy. The past two weeks, we saw a lot of interesting developments by way of relationships. As fans are aware, Jim and Pam are very much in love, Ryan and Kelly were over when Ryan got promoted and Dwight and Angela are in the midst of a very catty breakup. Oh, I went there. Yet another hour-long episode kicked off with Michael announcing to the staff that the Dunder Mifflin Infinite website was launching within the next 24 hours. In celebration, there would be a D.M. corporate party in New York City, which Michael had been invited to. All other branches would celebrate via webcam satellite parties which could be viewed by those at the New York gala.

Although the introduction of ‘Seinfeld Vision’ helped the premiere of 30 Rock, it didn’t do do much for the network.  CBS took Must See Thursday—followed by ABC, NBC, FOX and CW.

8pm
30 Rock

  • (14.1 million, 4.4/13 in 18-49 demo) took the hour in both viewers and the key demographic group.
  • ABC’s (9.8 million, 3.4/10) saw a loss of over 1 million viewers this week, while (8 million, 3.4/10) lost 1/2 as much.
  • Emmy-award winning (7.4 million, 3.4/9) saw a 53% viewer increase from last season’s finale.

9pm

  • Although (20.8 million, 6.3/16 in key demo) lost 16% of last week’s viewers, it still took the crown from Grey’s.
  • (18.1 million, 7.4/18) also saw a loss in viewers but remained dominant in the 18-49 demo.
  • A million less viewers saw Pam and Jim outed in this week’s episode of (8.5 million, 4.5/11).

10pm

  • (14.5 million, 3.8/11) lost 13% of last week’s audience and narrowly won in the key demos.
  • (9 million, 3.7/10) was down 1 million this week; (8.7 million, 3.7/10) was down from it’s 11.1 million premiere.

ABC LogoA new report shows that seven stories on the five broadcast networks currently feature lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters this fall season. Last season, there were nine. According to a study by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the number has been steadily dropping for the past three years. Caitlin Down (played by Bonnie Somerville) on ABC’s Cashmere Mafia, which won’t even premiere until December, is the only non-heterosexual regular character to appear on a new show this year. According to the study, ABC features more non-heterosexual characters than any other broadcast network. Shows like Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty,  Desperate Housewives, and the new Cashmere Mafia all feature non-heterosexual characters. NBC’s The Office features one character to fit the gay and lesbian mold. The report shows that, currently, CBS and the CW have no non-heterosexual characters on any of their shows, but CBS does include gay and lesbian contestants on their reality shows. In sharp contrast, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender representation on cable is going through the roof, with 57 characters this year alone.

EmmyIt was an evening of firsts at the 59th annual primetime Emmys. The first time the awards show was on . The first time Ryan Seacrest (resident FOX golden boy) hosted. The first time green concerns were proudly touted. And the first time I didn’t laugh at the Emmy host – not even once. FOX unabashedly promoted their own stars and shows all night long, though there were precious few wins for the network. Brian and Stewie from Family Guy provided some animated laughs, Lewis Black ranted and raved and performed a bit in the middle of the whole thing, and I found myself largely confused throughout the three hour-plus broadcast. Toward the end, Seacrest actually walked out on stage in a Henry VIII costume and told a gay joke – I couldn’t make this up if I tried, this actually happened. TV’s elite looked on in a mixture of horror and worry. Seacrest, unsurprisingly, acted and spoke exactly as he does while on American Idol. The strange, round stage provoked a lot of funny comments, and for a rare awards show change it was the acceptance speeches that became the saving grace of the FOX broadcast.

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

The Office

Having (purposely) blacked out what was left hanging in May, I actually managed to enjoy my summer.  Now with premiere dates looming, I’m finding myself salivating and feeling a bit antsy again.  Will my returning shows serve me right—or will they just drop the ball?  Here are the five season enders I’ve been fretting about the most:

The Office (NBC)
Although they have left me with dread before, the writers have proven they can write themselves out of a possible corner.  When Jim initially professed his feelings for Pam, I was afraid the show had gone too far, too soon.  But who could have predicted the route last season would take?  And now that Jim and Karen are kaput, will Jim and Pam finally be happy?  More importantly, will we be happy?  And let’s not forget about Ryan and Kelly.  What on earth will she do if he really takes that promotion?

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Right now I’m really in the mood for a good girl fight, so I would pay money to see Callie give Izzie (as much as I like her) what she seriously deserves.  There’s nothing better than a Callie-done-wrong.  And while I liked Preston Burke as a character, I’m surprisingly not sad that he walked out of his wedding.  If anything, I’m hoping this will lead Cristina Yang (the fabulous Sandra Oh) to become bitter x 5.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
Funny—this show is supposed to be a comedy, yet last season’s finale really shook me up.  When Ted and Robin realized they simply wanted different things in life, I immediately found myself going through stages of grief.  Nah—they’re

not going to break up.  Seriously, why

did they have to break up—so what if she doesn’t want kids??  Arrgh—can’t anyone be happy these days?  Really, I just want them to do what is best for the show.

CSI:  Crimes Scene Investigation (CBS)
As inconsistently as I watch the series (I have to know what’s going on at Seattle Grace)—I found myself drawn to that miniature-doll-killer storyline.  Now I will have to find more room on my DVR because I must know what will happen to Sara!  Will Grissom find her in time?  And now that everyone knows that they are secret luvahs, how will this affect the rest of the show?

Heroes (NBC)
All I can say is:  “WTF is gonna happen now?”
